Lila Emerson is a budding writer who supports herself by house-sitting. While on the job, she adds variety to her quiet life by habitually indulging in harmless voyeurism. One night, spying on her neighbors with binoculars, she witnesses a homicide that law enforcement officials later assure her was the first half of a murder-suicide. Disturbed by the killing, she goes to the police station where she meets artist Ashton Archer, the brother of the man who purportedly killed himself.
