Returning home to Kent after her adventures in Cornwall, and a quarrel with her erstwhile suitor, Lady Anne Addison sets out to collect herself and find her bearings once again. However, for Lady Anne, things never go as planned. While visiting a gypsy camp on her property, she sees a man she swears is the Marquess of Darkefell, the man she left Cornwall to avoid. She writes a scathing letter, accusing him of trespassing on her family estate.
Her letter prompts him to rush to Kent, to see what's really going on. Lady Anne, however, has other things to contend with. Her family and loved ones have fallen on hard times; is it the old gypsy's curse that's creating such hardship?
Her fate and that of the Darkefell family are now intertwined, and unsolved mysteries haunt them as she tries to reverse the awful events engulfing her. Even with danger lurking everywhere, Anne cannot ignore the growing attraction between herself and the marquess. But do they have a love strong enough to carry them beyond their plight and through a lifetime together?
